SUMMER CAMP: Youth Jazz Intensive

Monday June 16th - Friday June 20th

Grades 8-12

Students will have the opportunity to rehearse daily in a small ensemble and to participate in open-mic jam sessions with their peers and faculty. Culminating in a final public concert, participating students will have a primer in the fundamentals of jazz performance to prepare them for future performances, college auditions, and a lifelong love of America’s musical heritage.

SUMMER CAMP: Global Folk Arts

A playful introduction to the motifs of global Folk Arts and Crafts. Students will learn about the colorful and decorative geometric and natural patterns inspired by the handicraft traditions of Morocco, India, Mexico, Mali, local Pennsylvania Dutch and others. We’ll spend the week exploring symbolism, techniques and materials to create our own designs for block prints, paintings, sculptures, tiles, flags, textiles and more. On the final day of camp, students will host a festive fair sharing their creations.

SUMMER CAMP: Art as Activism with Katie O’Neill

Ages 9-13

Let’s raise awareness locally about what we are passionate about! Campers will work together to discuss how art can become an outlet for activism to promote our shared values in the community. We will discuss the importance of the environment, human and animal rights and social justice while participating in activities to explore different activist art forms like Craftism and Street Art. Students will collectively create art with upcycled supplies in line with our messages about impact and sustainability. We will be partnering with localized community-led organizations for mutual aid support and inspiration. Local educational field trips are offered within walking distance during the week. The last day of camp friends, family and neighbors are invited to share in our artistic activist expressions.

MAC Original Playreading Series: Acute Exposure by August Hakvaag

In the small town of Loving, New Mexico, Dell has a mission: to tell the people of the far-flung future that there is a dangerous store of nuclear waste hidden below the ground. Her neighbor and morbidly curious classmate, Mara, comes along for the ride after they're assigned to work on a project together for English class. As they grow closer, and the enormity of what's buried in their backyard sinks in, they find that their relationship is changing them: for better, for worse, forever. When Dell's path out of town becomes uncertain, the two will have to choose what they bring with them into their futures, and what they leave behind.

About the Play

Emily, a young white painter with a by-the-book mentality, wants nothing more than legitimacy in the eyes of the prestigious art world. When Emily gets the chance to pitch to an influential Curator, out from her paintings emerges a portrait of a lover and competitor: Tae, a Black artist whose speedy rise in the art world left Emily envious and bitter. As the Curator’s critical eye picks apart the person behind the paintings, Emily learns too late what Tae sacrificed to make it.
