On March 8th 1971, a group known as the Citizens' Commission to Investigate the FBI broke into the FBI office on Veterans Square in Media. The documents that they found exposed illegal surveillance activities by the federal government, including the infamous COINTELPRO program, and sparked congressional oversight of all federal intelligence agencies.
Three key players will be in Media for the anniversary. Meet Betty Medsger, the former Washington Post reporter who broke the story, as well as Bonnie Raines and Keith Forsyth, members of the Citizens' Commission.
The evening will begin with a screening of the documentary, 1971, which tells the backstory of the burglary and the group that gathered, many of them Philadelphia and Delaware County residents.
After the documentary, Betty, Bonnie and Keith will join us for a lively Q&A and book signing. David Boardman, Dean of the Klein College of Media and Communication at Temple University, will moderate the Q&A.
