Workshop: Writing Group for Poetry and Memoir
Tuesdays, 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM, February 7-March 28, 2023, $15, $11 for members
This is a drop-in writing group for anyone interested in memoir and/or poetry writing. Each session will include sample poems, memoir excerpts and inspirational quotes. We will have a few timed prompted writings with an option following to read aloud. There will also be optional homework ideas offered. Since everything written during the sessions will be spontaneous rough drafts, feedback will focus on encouragement and not critique. The intention of this group is to create a supportive writing community whose members inspire each other’s creativity and strengthen our commitment to write regularly.
Facilitator: Kelly Mashu
I have been writing poetry and journaling since age 14, more than three decades. I was an art teacher for 10 years and therefore have experience encouraging creativity as well as keeping a group focused and on time. I have attended writing workshops and participated in many poetry readings over the years. In college, I was selected to represent my school in a state-wide collegiate poetry presentation. I have written, copyrighted and self-published a poetry chapbook. Currently, I am finishing a series of 52 drawings with accompanying poems. Recently, I led a three-month Artist’s Way group. I envision this writing group to be structured in a similar way – not with myself as teacher, but as facilitator with the mutual goal of writing, sharing and garnering inspiration. I believe writing from life transforms experiences into art. Writing about your life can be healing and can shift the power from passive memory to empowered creation.
